1965: Gambit style

Game Napier,IR - Kitto,FEA, Devon vs Cornwall, 1965

Gambit style

Chess Notes

COUNTY MATCH WAS MARRED BY GALE.

The return match ... began with bad news for the Cornish players.  Four of their team were stranded on the far side of the river, the Torpoint ferry having ceased operating at 2 p.m.  In the top board game, I.R. Napier tried an unusual fifth move and F.E.A. Kitto replied in gambit style, sacrificing a Pawn for an open file against the enemy King.  However for a long time, his attack seemed hardly sufficient, but the quick time limit did not allow his opponent to find the best defence, and the Devon player achieved the following neat finish. — J.E.
