Confusing?

The pieces sometimes have slightly different names and symbols, depending if they are red or black. The back row is RNBMKMBNR, R = chariot, N = Horse, B = Elephant, M = Minister, K = King. The Persian for Chariot is Rukh, and the piece has the same moves; you can see a rather square wheel as part of the character (not sure how we ever ended up with a Tower/Castle). The little squiggle under the character for Horse shows the four legs, and you should be able to pick out the elephant's trunk. The Cannons on the third rank are a piece unique to Chinese Chess (Xiang Chi).

Chess Quotes

"One of the main aims has been to highlight the differences in appraoch between a Grandmaster and a weaker player, and to try and narrow the gap. To some extent this comes down to technical matters - more accurate analysis, superior opening knowledge, better endgame technique and so forth; but in other respects the difference goes deeper and many readers will find that they need to rethink much of their basic attitude to the game.
