Website help

We hope this website is as easy to use as possible and causes you no trouble.  Let us know if not.

The main thing to notice is that several of the games and positions are available as Portable Game Notation (PGN) files, which can be downloaded from the PGN block provided on every page and played through offline using a chess database or PGN viewer. In the PGN block there is also a link for you to view the games in a web page, no downloads required.

If you need help with the chess itself, there are pages which explain the rules, how to read and write chess games, chess symbols and some basic advice about the opening, middlegame and endgame. There is also a guide to levels, ratings and grades.

Chess Quotes

" It is often supposed that, apart from their 'extraordinary powers of memory', expert players have phenomenal powers of calculation. The beginner believes that experts can calculate dozens of moves ahead and he will lose to them only because he cannot calculate ahead so far. Yet this is utter nonsense. From my own experience I can say that grandmasters do not do an inordinate amount of calculating. Tests (notably de Groot's experiments) supports me in this claim.
