Taylor and Edmund were wondering about a game where you cannot take a piece of higher rank. That's a feature of Do Shou Gi and Luzhangqi, and this Western game, Stratego.

We didn't win much last year, and even came last in the league... but we were so close to the other teams while our gradings were so far behind, that we won the grading prize!
Here's Taylor accepting the cup from Brian Aldwin, President of the East Devon Chess League, at the Coast/Country Jamboree.
I'll bring it in to show you when the club starts up again in September.

Teacher's reward stickers, foam discs.
ChessWord - I have no rules for this one, but I think you accumulate letters to make a word, and meanwhile can capture the opponent's pieces.

Schlaukopf - a German version of Parker game 'Take the Brain' (US 'Smess'), where Ninnies and Numbskulls have become Dummkopfen and SchiltzOhren. Haven't seen this for 40 years! The square you sit on determines how you can move, so it can take 3 moves to hop to an adjacent square. One of my favourite variations of chess. A more sober version 'All the King's men' was also marketed, with I believe inferior (or incomplete) rules.

A nice bone barleycorn set was acquired with an amusingly mismatched home-made King. Alan Dewey, the ChessSpy, was kind enough to source one for me which was a better fit.
The thing on the right has been put together from bits of a Selenus set, whose characteristic feature is (nested) crowns. Alan points out that they normally point upwards!

They're the set of pentominoes, with an extra 2x2 shape. Martin Gardner describes the puzzle in his first Mathematical puzzles and diversions book, from which a page is reproduced. The chequered pattern restricts the number of solutions but also gives some clues.

All the King's Men
Having accidentally invented the great game Take the Brain [UK, aka SMESS (USA), Schlaukopf (Ger) ], Parker produced this more grown-up version, but the pieces are a little too similar for my comfort - the game awaits its Jaques/Staunton collaboration.
If you play it, allow Archers to promote to Knights on the back rank.
